Meet Bay Country Veterinary Hospital’s Dedicated Veterinarians & Staff
Gene Bauer, DVM
Dr. Bauer was born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and then raised in central New Jersey. The Shenandoah Valley lured him back for his college years, where he earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from Virginia Tech. After spending summers working for a local veterinarian, he was excited to gain entry to, and ultimately graduate from, the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999. He chose Maryland as a perfect place to settle, in part due to its proximity to friends and family.
Dr. Bauer has been practicing at Bay Country since 2004 and lives in the Crownsville community of Herald Harbor. He shares a home with his significant other, Sarah, and their Italian Greyhound, Spanky. Be sure to wave if you see them running in the neighborhood! Dr. Bauer’s special practice interests include challenging skin cases and soft tissue surgery. When he’s not at the office, he enjoys camping and hiking with Sarah and Spanky, a round of golf with friends, and rooting for the Hokies!
Samantha Smith, DVM
Dr. Smith grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland. She attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she received an undergraduate degree in animal science. She then attended Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1999.
Dr. Smith has been with Bay Country Veterinary Hospital since graduation. When not working, she enjoys riding and competing in dressage with her three horses. She resides in the local community of Herald Harbor and is owned by four dogs, three cats, and an assortment of other small animals.
Paula Prestia, DVM
A native of Severna Park, Dr. Prestia received her undergraduate degree in Mass Communications and History from the University of Virginia. After working at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins and the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Prestia switched gears and earned her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. Her special interests include ophthalmology and internal medicine.
Dr. Prestia lives in Arnold and shares her home with her four cats (Jimmy, Carter, Lucy, and Lilly) and her mixed breed dog Grace. In her free time, she studies American Sign Language and enjoys gardening, cooking, photography, swimming, boating on the bay, and cheering for her beloved Wahoos!
Rebecca McLean, DVM
Dr. McLean grew up in Harford County, Maryland, and is very pleased to be back in her home state after practicing for several years in Virginia. After receiving her undergraduate degree from Barnard College, Dr. McLean worked as a veterinary technician in Manhattan for several years before deciding to return to school for her DVM. Dr. McLean attended Ross University, and completed her clinical studies at Purdue University.
Outside of work, Dr. McLean enjoys sailing, kayaking, and hiking with her beloved pit bull Coco (feel free to ask her to see pictures, she will happily show you thousands of them.) Dr. McLean lives in Stevensville with her significant other (who is also a veterinarian), Coco, as well as 3 yorkies and two cats.
Heather Dearie, DVM
Dr Dearie joined the Bay Country family in October of 2014. She grew up in Millersville, Maryland. Dr. Dearie attended Salisbury University where she received an undergraduate degree in Biology. She then attended Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts and graduated in 2007. Dr. Dearie enjoys working with dogs and cats, as well as exotics (ferrets, rabbits, rodents, reptiles, and birds).
When not at work, Dr. Dearie enjoys spending time with her two children, husband, and three cats. She also enjoys the outdoors and arts and crafts activities with her children.
